About This Place

Located in the vibrant heart of Hell's Kitchen, Sophie's Cuban Cuisine offers an authentic taste of Cuba that stands out in New York City’s diverse culinary scene. Specializing in Cuban cuisine, this beloved restaurant and sandwich shop is a treasure trove of bold, comforting flavors that transport you straight to the Caribbean with every bite.

Stepping into Sophie's feels like entering a lively yet casual neighborhood spot where the aromas of slow-cooked meats, freshly fried tostones, and simmering black beans instantly awaken your appetite. The menu is a flavorful journey through Cuban culinary staples: the yellow rice is fluffy and perfectly seasoned, serving as the perfect base for standout dishes like the pernil with a twist — tender, savory pork slow-roasted to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Don’t miss their irresistible sweet plantains and the freshly made cheese and guava empanadas, which perfectly balance sweet and savory notes.

For meat lovers, the selection is particularly impressive. From the succulent ox tails — a customer favorite available only on select days — to the crispy fried pork chops and spicy grilled chicken, every dish promises a rich depth of flavor. The care put into each entrée is palpable; Brian Yago’s experience highlights the quality and consistency, where even quick takeout orders are ready and steaming hot with prompt service.

Sophie's isn’t just about hearty mains; their sides are thoughtfully crafted to complement and elevate every meal. The moro rice, a Caribbean classic of rice and red beans, delivers a smoky, earthy backdrop, while their black beans offer that hearty, velvety texture that’s so integral to Cuban comfort food. To wash it all down, their menu of tropical batidos—refreshingly creamy tropical fruit shakes—provide the perfect sweet and cool contrast to the savory dishes.

The dining atmosphere at Sophie's Cuban Cuisine is as inviting as their food. It's casual and unpretentious, making it an ideal spot for a satisfying lunch or a quick, flavorful dinner. Customers like Tilly Canoville, who frequents the spot whenever visiting New York, attest to the warm, familiar vibe that makes this place feel like a home away from home, especially for those craving genuine Cuban flavors. Even with the hustle of New York life, Sophie's manages to deliver an experience filled with familiar tastes and friendly service.

Real customer feedback underscores the authenticity and dedication of the team behind Sophie's. Lauren S calls it “a classic New York City Cuban establishment” with fresh and varied dishes, while Beth Senturia praises the efficient delivery and the crave-worthy oxtail stew that’s only available on special days. Even when running low on items near closing, the staff’s kindness and willingness to prepare hot Cuban sandwiches leave a lasting positive impression, as noted by Tatiana Hoover.

For anyone seeking a genuine Cuban culinary experience in Hell’s Kitchen or a quick Cuban-inspired takeout, Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine offers a delightful blend of tradition, quality, and heart. Their offerings go beyond just food; it’s a taste of Cuban heritage served with care and a smile.

This is a classic New York City Cuban establishment. They have over eight locations in the city. I love the casual but delicious food. It’s a great place to grab lunch or a quick dinner. Everything is made fresh and they always have a good variety. I love the oxtail, but make sure you called to make sure they have it cause they only have it on certain days. Definitely recommend the homemade empanadas!! They have a great selection of flavors!!

Food was very high quality. I was lucky to come in on a day they were serving their oxtail. Its been soo long since I have had some and this hit the spot. This is my second time coming in and it definitely hits the spot every time. Service is quick I order this on my way to the store and when I got there the food was ready. Who loves orange soda? I do! So I paired my meal with it and it was all satisfying. 10/10 recommend.

Sophie’s Cuban is legit one of my favourite places to go in New York to get food. It came highly recommended by my good friend who’s been living in New York for over 4 years when I first went to New York last year and now I’ve been back to NYC 6 times and I’ve been back each time to sophies’s for my empanadas and my dinner. As a flight attendant getting good food to take away but has that homemade fresh feeling as well is hard to come back and honestly Sophie’s is always going to get my money! The standard is so high and it helps that the servers are always friendly and lovely!

The delivery was faster than I expected which was great. The food arrived hot and was wonderful. I love their oxtail stew - it’s only available Mon, Weds, Friday and if you don’t order early they will run out. I’m very happy.

We remember this restaurant from years ago. It’s still good, but not as great as we remember. We did get there close to closing time, and they were out of a lot of food. The staff was kind enough to cook us two good Cuban sandwiches. The empanadas were hot and tasty.

As a coffee lover, I came looking for the REAL DEAL in Cuban coffee and I've definitely enjoy it, is not as strong as I thought it will be but it was really good. Special thanks to Patty for her service and touch making our coffees!!!

Visiting from NC. Amazing food and friendly people. I had the Cuban and it was great. I’ll be back to try the plantains.
